What a month March is proving to be so far! We received enough help to partially pay for 4 new enclosures, and pay for cement work (this is not including fencing), and the costs of labor, now we need to raise more to pay off our debt.

On a positive note, our admin Nathalie flew out to Greece this past week to collect Happy and two other dogs and take them back to the Netherlands to new homes, what good news!

Also, our dogs Jackie, Tara, Spirit, Dylan and Snow are currently in Athens waiting for transport to the UK, Jackie and Dylan will be going to new homes,  Snow in to foster, and Spirit and Tara will be waiting in kennels for someone to fall in love with them.

Just when we think we have really done well, out of the blue comes more pressure, in the form of Typhus, five puppies spent several days at the vet on Intravenous drips for fluid hydration, and all recovered and are back with Stavroula, we are hoping that they will stay healthy now, two are already being adopted and we are happy that those two, Luna and Brodie will be off to a new life within a couple of months. That leaves Bambi, Sunny and Gaia still looking for adopters, or even fosterer's until we can find permanent homes.

This past week two young puppies were taken in, because they had been seen at the roadside very ill, with passers by ignoring them, they have been named Poppy and Rosie. Poppy and Rosie are still quite vulnerable, and have yet to be vaccinated. At the same time a young female dog was also taken in, she has been named Melody, such a sweet name which really suits her

The really bad end to the week came in the form of a white plastic sack, dumped just outside the shelter, when it was untied (yes untied!) four puppies were barely conscious, weak and unsteady from lack of air, we do believe another half an hour they may have died!

We also have the lovely Shepherd type dog, named Filos, who people were complaining he was loose on the street for weeks. Filos has Heartworm and so far 300 euros for treatment has been needed, with a further 200 pending. He is a super dog, he deserves a fighting chance.

Some of our dogs have Heartworm and/or Leishmania, these are diseases spread by Sandflies and Ticks, and are under treatment for this. It isn’t always puppies who get ill, the vets visits and costs of treatment are always a vital part of our work to get the dogs back to health.

So, this week, has seen good things like cement work and enclosures, and bad things with more poor dogs being left in distress.

There are charities in Europe that may be willing to capture and neuter some of the strays in the town, but they can only do this with the permission and encouragement of the Officials of the Municipality. We would like to explore this possibility, with the support of the town, it would greatly alleviate the stray problem.

We really need more than ever to find suitable adopters or fosterers for our dogs/puppies, some have been in the shelter almost their whole life, and its very sad to see them wasting the good years in a shelter environment. There are many loving characters in the shelter .

Finally – we are so grateful for the donations from the kindest people, without whom we would cease to exist. Every donation, every fundraiser held by supporters is so very greatly appreciated by us!

Our wonderful sponsors enable us to keep going with feeding and day to day expenses, but we are at crisis point now, with costs of essential work outstanding. We owe 900 euro for the enclosures, and still have an outstanding vet bill of 1500 euro!

We want to get through this crisis ...

Please if you can spare anything at this time we can take donations via Pay Pal here elpidashelterofhope@gmail.com
