Our adoption and foster process is simple and straight forward, but thorough. The dogs well-being is of greatest importance and always comes first!
If you are interested in adopting one of our dogs, we will ask you to complete our adoption application form, so we can get to know more about you, your family, previous experiences, living situation etc. so we can help find you a dog who we think is the most suitable for you.
A home check will be required. We do home checks to ensure your home is safe for a dog, meet other family members and pets, and to get a better impression of who you are. We won't go through your drawers or snoop in your closet! If your application is accepted, we will start preparing the dog for travel, this takes about a month, depending on the age and health of the dog. Puppies can travel at the earliest at five months old, under the condition that a rabies vaccination was given at the age of three months. The dog will be fully vaccinated and have a microchip and passport upon travel. Depending on age, the dog will also be spayed or neutered.
Important - Health and vet advice:
All dogs had their blood tested prior departure from Greece. Unless otherwise specified, your dog’s blood test came back negative for diseases such as and including Canine Leishmania, Heartworm, Babesia and Erlichia. There is a slight risk that a dog, even though an initial test came back negative, is a carrier of either Canine Leishmania or Heartworm. Therefore, we strongly advice to have your vet perform a blood test and look for Canine Leishmania and Heartworm after approximately 6 months. For more information about Canine Leishmania click here.
Depending on where you live, transportations will be arranged accordingly. For the UK, we use a larger vehicle as transportation. The dogs will be transported by professionals. It is a long journey which takes approx 4-5 days, but their safety always comes first, and even though it is scary and tiring for them, they are being well cared for. Upon arrival in the UK, the dog will be kept in kennels or their noted address for 48 for inspection according to the legislation. If it is to the the rest of Europe, United States or Canada, transportation will go by air if transportation by road is not possible.
The fee for adopting a dog from us is £450. This is only to cover the costs for transport by road. All other costs are absorbed by us. There could be additional costs for transportation depending on where you live. Please contact us for information about this.
A contract will be signed by both parties to ensure the well-being of the dog. Until the adoption contract has been signed by both parties, the ownership of the dog will remain with Elpida and can at any point up until then be reclaimed.
We will support you through out the entire process, answer all your questions and help where we can. Adopting an Elpida dog is special and we love to welcome you in to the Elpida family! And of course, once the dog is with you, we will continue to be there for you for advice and support. We love to stay in touch with you and get regular updates how your new family member is doing, and photos of those precious moments.
If you live in the Netherlands all our adoptions go through the organization Dierenhulp Zonder Grenzen, please contact them if you are interested in on of our dogs.
